Product Overview
The Scruffs Hydra safety boots represent a rigorous approach to foot protection, combining high-specification safety features with the practical requirements of the British climate. These mid-ankle boots are constructed from high-quality nubuck leather and are fully waterproof, ensuring that adverse weather does not translate into uncomfortable working conditions. Certified to EN ISO 20345:2011 standards with an S3 rating, they provide a professional solution for those who require robust footwear without the excessive weight often associated with traditional safety gear.
Key Features
- Aluminium Toecap: This provides essential protection against impact and compression while remaining significantly lighter than traditional steel, reducing wearer fatigue during long shifts.
- Composite Mid-plate: A flexible, non-metallic plate prevents sharp objects from piercing the sole, offering comprehensive protection without compromising the natural movement of the foot.
- Fully Waterproof: The integrated membrane ensures feet stay dry in wet environments, which is critical for maintaining thermal regulation and preventing skin irritation.
- Poron Insole: This advanced cushioning technology provides superior shock absorption underfoot, distributing pressure more evenly to enhance comfort on hard surfaces.
- Micro-fresh Technology: This treatment inhibits the growth of mould and bacteria, which is instrumental in reducing odours and extending the hygienic life of the boot.
- Anti-static & Slip-resistant: The outsole is designed to resist electrostatic build-up and provide dependable grip, which is vital for safety on varied industrial flooring.
Design & Performance
The choice of a nubuck leather upper provides a durable yet supple exterior that matures well over time. Unlike standard smooth leather, nubuck offers a refined aesthetic while maintaining high resistance to abrasion. The interior is designed with a padded tongue and collar, which serves to reduce friction against the ankle and prevent debris from entering the boot. The S3 rating signifies a substantial level of protection, including water penetration resistance and energy absorption in the heel area. Despite being a sturdy, substantial boot, the use of aluminium and composite materials ensures it does not feel cumbersome, allowing for greater agility on site.
Why No Customisation?
We do not offer customisation on the Scruffs Hydra safety boots to ensure the integrity of your personal protective equipment (PPE). These boots are manufactured to meet strict EN ISO 20345:2011 safety standards. Any attempt to embroider or heat-press the nubuck leather would likely pierce or compromise the waterproof membrane, rendering the S3 rating void and potentially weakening the structural safety of the footwear. Your safety is paramount, and preserving the manufacturer's original specification is the only way to ensure these boots perform as intended in a hazardous environment.
Use Cases
These boots are specifically engineered for professionals working in demanding environments such as construction sites, civil engineering projects, and outdoor maintenance. They are particularly well-suited for tradespeople who transition between indoor and outdoor work, where the waterproof membrane and slip-resistant soles provide necessary versatility. The anti-static properties also make them a suitable choice for environments where the management of electrostatic discharge is a safety requirement.

Practical Advice
The Scruffs Hydra is available in a standard range from size 7 to 12. We recommend ensuring a secure fit around the ankle using the padded collar to maximise support. If you are frequently between sizes, the inclusion of the Poron insole provides a generous fit that accommodates most medium-to-thick work socks. Being a mid-ankle boot, it pairs effectively with heavy-duty work trousers, providing a seamless barrier against moisture and grit.
Caring for your product
To maintain the performance and longevity of your nubuck leather boots, it is essential to clean them regularly. Use a dedicated suede or nubuck brush to remove surface dirt and debris after each shift. Allowing mud to dry and remain on the leather can strip the material of its natural oils, leading to premature cracking.
If the boots become saturated, they should be allowed to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area. Never place them directly against a heat source, such as a radiator, as rapid drying can cause the nubuck to become brittle and the waterproof membrane to fail. For internal hygiene, the Micro-fresh technology will manage odours, but removing the insoles occasionally to air out the interior will further extend the life of the footwear.
Finally, avoid using standard wax polishes on nubuck leather, as this will flatten the nap and alter the appearance. Instead, use specific nubuck conditioners or waterproof sprays designed to maintain the breathability and water-repellent properties of the material.
