Long aprons that range between 34 - 40 inches long is an ideal length for aprons used by chefs and in kitchens. The longer aprons provide an extra level of protection against unwanted spills and stains. However, the ideal length of the apron for light home-cooking is 28-34 inches. The slightly shorter length of apron still offers protection against spills and splashes, but is lighter to wear and easier to move around in. For people who need an apron to suit a lot of moving around, we recommend a length of around 17-14 inches. This shorter length allows for a wider range of free movements and is perfectly suited for cafe or waiting staff.
Aprons are not a one-size fits all across the board. Many aprons are offered in one size, but they have an adjustable neck strap, so that your apron can be adapted to suit your body. Aprons can also come in petite sizes, with a shorter torso or with extended sizes to suit larger frames.
When choosing your kitchen apron, you should first consider how much protection you require in the kitchen. Do you need a traditional apron or a longer professional apron that offers more protection due to being longer? Next, think about the type of fabric you would like. Even though fabrics like denim are super hardwearing and durable, choosing a cotton canvas can also offer durability but can be more comfortable to wear. Next, choose your colour. Are you looking for a colourful apron to brighten up your home cooking or are you looking for a white apron for your professional kitchens?
A typical kitchen apron should be around ¼ inch (6mm) thick. This provides a generous amount of protection without being too stiff to restrict your movement. The thickness of your apron will help to keep you protected against hot splashes or spills from cooking. It will also help to protect your clothes from stains sinking through the materials.
The best fabric for aprons is cotton canvas. Cotton is a durable material that is soft to touch, so is comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Cotton canvas is created that is woven from cotton fibres. Whilst its texture is slightly rough, it is strong and resistant against tears. Cotton canvas is easy to clean, as it can be spot cleaned, washed and tumble dried without sacrificing its quality and durability, making it a fantastic choice for your apron.
