Product Overview

The Waffle Fleece Hooded Baselayer is a sophisticated piece of technical apparel designed for professionals who require consistent thermal regulation in challenging environments. This is not a standard t-shirt; it is a high-performance foundation layer that utilises a dual-action fabric structure to manage both temperature and moisture. By combining a smooth knit outer face with a textured waffle fleece interior, this garment provides an exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio without the bulk of traditional thermal wear.

Key Features

  • Integrated Waffle Fleece Lining: The internal waffle structure creates small pockets of trapped air, acting as a natural insulator to keep you warm in cold conditions.
  • Advanced Moisture Management: The fabric is engineered to be breathable and moisture-wicking, actively drawing perspiration away from the skin to keep you dry and comfortable during physical exertion.
  • Anti-Bacterial Finish: A specialised treatment has been applied to the fibres to inhibit the growth of bacteria and neutralise odours, ensuring the garment remains fresh through long shifts.
  • Extended Hood and Neck Design: The ergonomic hood provides a skin-tight fit, offering comprehensive protection for the head and neck against biting winds.
  • Strategically Placed Breathe-Holes: Integrated ventilation around the face area ensures easy breathing and prevents the build-up of moisture inside the hood.
  • Flat-Lock Abrasion-Free Seams: By positioning seams away from the shoulders and using flat-lock stitching, the garment eliminates the risk of chafing, particularly when worn under heavy outer layers or backpacks.

Design & Performance

Crafted from a blend of polyester and elastane, this base layer offers a substantial degree of four-way stretch. This ensures the garment moves with the body, providing a compression-like fit that is essential for effective thermal performance. The lightweight, brushed-back fabric feels soft against the skin, while the smooth outer face allows for friction-free layering under fleeces, jackets, or overalls.

The technical focus of the design is evident in the seam placement. Traditional shoulder seams can often cause irritation when pressed down by the weight of a heavy jacket or tool belt. By shifting these seams, Portwest has ensured that the B191 remains comfortable even during the most demanding physical tasks.

Why No Customisation?

We do not offer customisation on this specific hooded base layer for several practical reasons. As a garment designed to be worn directly against the skin, internal embroidery backing or heavy stitching would cause significant irritation and chafing. Furthermore, the high elastane content and the delicate waffle structure of the fabric are not suited to the high heat of transfer printing or the tension of embroidery frames, which could compromise the garment’s moisture-wicking and thermal properties.

Use Cases

This baselayer is an essential component for any outdoor professional working in cold or variable climates. It is particularly suited for construction workers, engineers, and site managers who require a versatile layer that can adapt to changing activity levels. It also performs excellently for those in the logistics or delivery sectors who frequently move between cold vehicles and outdoor environments.

Practical Advice

For a base layer to work effectively, it should be worn as close to the skin as possible. We recommend selecting your true size to ensure a snug fit that allows the moisture-wicking technology to function. When layering, pair this with a breathable mid-layer to allow moisture to continue moving away from the body.

Caring for your product

To maintain the technical performance of the waffle fleece and the anti-bacterial finish, it is vital to follow the specific care instructions provided. Failure to do so may result in the loss of elasticity or a reduction in thermal efficiency.

We recommend a maximum wash temperature of 30°C using a mild process. Higher temperatures can damage the elastane fibres, causing the garment to lose its shape and compression fit. Do not use bleach, as harsh chemicals will degrade the anti-bacterial treatment and the integrity of the fabric.

The garment should be line dried only; do not tumble dry, as the intense heat of a dryer can melt the synthetic fibres and flatten the waffle texture. Finally, do not iron or dry clean this product, as these processes are unnecessary for the fabric type and will likely cause permanent damage to the garment's structure.
