What Workwear is Available for Women?

Women and fashion are thought to have a symbiotic relationship; their influence on each other has been a constant factor of the past, the present day, and is likely to continue long into the future.

Taking into account that women were only permitted to step into the official world of work during the mid-20th century, it is no wonder that the evolution of their uniforms has taken longer than their male counterparts.

So, this is why here at MyWorkwear, we make it our mission to be inclusive towards all women in the workplace. Our production and office team is made up of a majority of women, which, no doubt, helps us to understand the needs and requirements of the working woman and means that we only recommend products we know will be right for you.

We value every single one of our customers – no matter their shape, size, or gender – and believe that everyone deserves to find workwear that fits them correctly and to wear it with confidence.

Fashion or Function (or both?)

In our fast-moving society, there never seem to be enough designs, styles, or clothing options being manufactured to keep up with us and our changing opinions on what is considered fashionable. Similarly, women can not buy into each new trend that emerges and every latest beauty standard they are expected to follow.

It is a never-ending cycle, one that our company finds itself in the middle of.

Try typing ‘women’s workwear’ into Google and watch how many high-fashion and aesthetic-conscious adverts pop up on your screen. This is a physical manifestation of just how differently women’s uniforms are viewed in comparison to men’s, as preserving femininity and being perceived as attractive are too often prioritised over the comfort and practicality of the wearer.

(Don’t worry, though – try typing ‘women’s workwear’ into our website search bar, and you will not be disappointed by our range.)

Office and corporate wear is now an extremely popular fashion movement, with women and men being seen to style blazers, ties, and button-up waistcoats as statement pieces, with long, wide-leg trousers or a pleated skirt to meld the look together.

Over the years, construction workwear has also made its way into the eye of the fashion industry, as cargos with pockets, oversized utilitarian shirts and heavy combat boots are now becoming key components of ordinary outfits.

Although contemporary workwear might be becoming more popular, especially with its simplistic unisex and androgynous stylistics, there are still gaps in the market. This disconnect could be bridged by developing more women’s workwear that is available for all of their possible job roles – but it is still very much a man’s working world.

How Far We Have Come

When women started to move further away from their domestic duties and began embarking on working in the fields and factories, we witnessed how they were being allowed to wear more functional, ‘masculine’ uniforms instead of their traditional long, layered skirts and chiffon blouses.

During WW1, we began to see women wearing ‘the trouser’ with confidence and flair, empowering women to express themselves through this breakthrough in fashion, and also impacting their ability to function better at work.

Trousers were originally fabricated as a garment reserved purely for men, but as women started to choose trousers and short skirts, it became an extremely pivotal change.

Owning and claiming the power to wear ‘the suit’ is where the uprise of female-empowered workwear began. The functional pantsuit also came about in the late 20th century, as a ‘daring’ look that women adopted to oppose societal beliefs that they were not the right gender or didn’t have the correct body shape to rock it.

These brave and non-conforming choices that women have made over the last century have enabled the modern woman today to select any of these workwear options as everyday staples, without second-guessing whether she is dressed feminine enough to fulfil her place within her profession.

MyWorkwear and our Women’s Workwear

It is important for us, as a company, to be committed to supplying a range of garments that incorporate the comfort and durability of a typical ‘man’s uniform’, but with a woman’s touch.

We like to consider:

  • What about the ladies who perform more manual labour?

  • What about the women working in broader industries that need protection to fulfil their job roles?

  • What about the women in the team who have to wear men’s or unisex fit garments because there just isn’t a choice for a female fit?
